How to Setup and Use a Band Saw
Is carpentry something you enjoy or just working with wood? Well, you obviously know the great advantages that a band saw avails. Due to the range of tasks achievable using a band saw, good wood shops will make sure they have one for use. Wood enthusiasts like band saws for the ability they present in cutting curves but most essentially, it’s all about the mastery on offer in freehand cutting. You can equally carry out resawing jobs using band saws. There exist different shapes and sizes of band saws, but the basic constituents are all similar. First, there is a band of steel with steel that rotates on two wheels and through a table. There are guides and bearings above and below the blade that holds it in position as it cuts. All you now do is place the board on the table and drive it through the blade. Let us now interrogate the use of a band saw.
Start your operations by cleaning the band saw. Cleaning the dust and any leftover wood chips can make an enormous disparity in the quality of cut you get once you start operations. Once clean, the band saw needs a blade assessment. Simple use the right blade for the right job. There should be a correlation between the blade and the job. A change might be needed to get a smoother or rougher cut.
Blade guides and guards are now to be examined. The blade guides normally keep the blade level and in place. The band saw will have two sets of this, with one set higher and the other set lower. Ensure that the two sets of blade guides are adjacent so that the cutting efficiency is higher. The blade guard, on the other hand, should be close to the wood being cut. The last thing you need is an exposed blade running at crazy speed when making a small cut. Therefore, check its level before cutting starts.
Ensure that your band saw remains in an unplugged state when not in use. The purpose of this is to enhance your safety as you change blades or clean. Once cutting is done, proceed to unplug the band saw. It is wise to release the blade tension once you don’t intend to use the bad saw for some days. This step will keep the metal from getting fatigued and ultimately breaking prematurely. Finally, as good practice, make sure you do some cleaning in preparation for next time.
